There are so many zombie movies out there. Some are good. Some are bad. Some are gruesome. Some are funny.

Many of them follow the same Romero/Brooks type zombie. Others follow their own rules and have come up with a new type of zombie.

I am only including actual zombie movies. Not just any undead, for example The Evil Dead is a fantastic movie but will not be included. The third one, Army of Darkness, did have zombies in it but real zombies are neutral, brainless, killing machines. They follow no one and have no evil intent. They just want to eat flesh and brains. They also have to be the main focus of the movie. Army of Darkness’s zombies were just an army for a greater evil.

Here it is. My list of top ten zombie movies.

10. World War Z

Zombie Type: Fast Zombies

Incubation: Seconds

This is an intense zombie movie based loosely on Max Brooks’ book of the same name. I say loosely because they changed zombie types. A lot of people were disappointed by this and by the fact that they added and subtracted a few parts. Don’t worry, the sequel is coming out soon to fill in the parts they missed.

On the whole, this is a great movie. A lot of new zombie deaths and the ‘tower of zombies’ to get over the wall at one point is crazy!

9. 28 Days Later (2002)

Zombie Type: Fast Zombies

Incubation: Seconds

Sequel: 28 Weeks Later

This movie is terror. If this type of zombie is unleashed upon our society, we are done. The can turn a whole crowd of civilians in mere minutes. The only advantage is that there are no infected people who’ve been bitten but haven’t turned yet getting through borders or walls to turn and kill from within. It avoids the moral dilemma of killing someone who has been bitten before they’ve turned.

8. Dead Alive (1992)

Zombie Type: Slow Zombies

Incubation: Hours

This is the funniest zombie movie. It’s also the bloodiest. Literally. No movie has used as much fake blood as this one. In their record breaking lawnmower scene, fake blood was pumped at a rate of 5 gallons per second. If you watch it, you are in for a good time.

7. Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Zombie Type: Slow Zombies

Incubation: Hours

While the zombie genre can be traced back to the 1930’s with films such as White Zombie featuring Bela Lugosi, modern day zombies can be traced back to George Romero’s masterpiece, Night of the Living Dead. He introduces the slow, brainless zombies that unwittingly use siege tactics against a handful of people trapped in a farm house. There is also a remake of the same name. Just as good.

6. The Return of the Living Dead (1985)

Zombie Type: Slow Zombies but they can’t be killed by destroying their brains.

Incubation: Hours. Can also be transmitted by breathing fumes from a burning zombie or from the original source chemicals.

This is the zombie apocalypse that scares me the most. You can’t shoot them in the head. Even if you chop them up into pieces, the pieces come after you. Definitely a fun movie. A must-watch for any zombie lover. Plus there are 4 sequels.

5. Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead (2014)

IMDB: Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead

Zombie Type: Fast at Night; Slow during the day. Also their breath is combustible.

Incubation: Hours. One chick can kind of control them because some scientist infected her.

Man this is a good one. It’s like The Road Warrior meets Night of the Living Dead. Some people trapped in a farmhouse, including a skilled mechanic, use combustible zombie-breath to fuel their ride out to save his sister, who has been taken hostage and experimented on. She finds that she can somewhat control the zombies. This movie is nonstop fun. Sequel coming out soon.

4. Shaun of the Dead (2004)

Zombie Type: Slow Zombies

Incubation: Hours

This is definitely a good one! Lots of laughs and ridiculousness combined with zombie action. Simon Pegg and Nick frost are always a good comedy duo.

3. Resident Evil (2002)

Zombie Type: Mostly Slow Zombies but many different types.

Incubation: Hours

The whole Resident Evil series is great but the best one is the first and they lose a few points with each consecutive movie. The female protagonist, Alice (Milla Jovovich), is actually part zombie herself which makes her able to kick some zombie ass. Even the crazy huge ones that appear sometimes. It’s your standard infiltrating an infected lab zombie movie. It has a lot of sequels as well.

2. Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Zombie Type: Fast Zombies

Incubation: Hours

This is the one that got me into zombies. I fell in love with the horror of being trapped in a mall. The hopelessness. Where should they go? What should they do? Stay there until their supplies run out and wait to die? The human drama. The zombie baby. Everything. Remember, honesty is the most important part of any relationship.

1. Dawn of the Dead (1978)

Zombie Type: Slow Zombies

Incubation: Hours

When there is no more room in hell, the dead shall walk the earth. They’re trapped in a mall surrounded by zombies. One of the first and best. Perfect combination of scary with a few little funny bits.
